The VT-5 employs passive LC circuitry with class-A triode vacuum tube stages for input and output, drawing inspiration from the acclaimed VT-1/VT-2 mic preamp design. The LC-style passive equalization circuitry, a classic design, provides high-quality, musical tonal control. With a line-level, transformer-balanced bridging input, adjustable gain, and custom Jensen transformers, it is ideal for mastering or as a mix buss processor.
All controls are stepped for precise repeatability, and the equalizer is constructed with heavy-gauge aluminum, featuring a 3RU, 1/4-inch thick front panel in D.W. Fearn red. Designed with audio professionals in mind, the frequencies and curves were meticulously determined by ear, resulting in a highly-musical equalizer with substantial range. A recent update optimizes the VT-5 for an even quieter operation by eliminating the need for an internal fan.
