MANLEY VARIABLE MU® MASTERING VERSION "THE WORKS"
MS Mod & T-Bar Mod Options for Enhanced Versatility
MS Mod (Mid/Side Mod): The MS Mod introduces stereo encoding and decoding capabilities, providing exciting possibilities for stereo image enhancement. This modification enables the independent compression of the in-phase (mid) and out-of-phase (side) components of the stereo signal. For instance, by compressing only the in-phase information, the stereo image can be augmented while leaving the out-of-phase content untouched. Conversely, for scenarios requiring a more mono mix, such as for broadcast or vinyl-cutting, the MS Mod can be set to reduce the out-of-phase information, resulting in a more pronounced in-phase material in the final mix. This mod enhances flexibility in shaping the stereo field and is a valuable tool for creative processing.
T-Bar Mod (Tube Replacement for Vintage Tone): The T-Bar Mod addresses the challenges posed by the scarcity and unusability of the original USA GE 6386 tubes, which were replaced by 5670 tubes in newer Variable Mu units. To maintain the vintage tone and performance of the classic Variable Mu, the T-Bar Mod uses a pair of 6BA6 pentodes wired as single triodes to replace each dual triode 5670 (or 6386). This modification ensures optimal matching of each phase-half section and stereo set, allowing for the selection of low-noise and low-microphonic sets at a low cost. The T-Bar Mod closely replicates the smooth limiting curves of the original 6386 tubes, preserving the sonic characteristics that users appreciate.
Combined Options for Enhanced Functionality: The Manley Variable Mu Limiter Compressor offers both MS Mod and T-Bar Mod options, allowing users to benefit from the unique capabilities of each modification. To accommodate these enhancements, the power switch is relocated to the rear panel when the MS Mod is applied. Additionally, the T-Bar Mod replaces the 5670 tubes with 6BA6 pentodes, ensuring a seamless integration of both modifications for a versatile and powerful audio processing tool.
